"A bit of peace and quiet is of great importance to homebuyers, as our homes provide a place where we can relax and unwind after the hectic pace of day-to-day life."

The survey of recent UK homebuyers, commissioned by eXp UK found that peace and quiet is a key factor for the vast majority of homebuyers, with 92% stating it was of importance when searching for the last home.

So much so that 80% of those surveyed were hunting for a home that allowed them to sit outside without being disturbed by any external noise. 35% even went as far as disregarding otherwise suitable homes during the first viewing due to noise pollution.

But what ranks as the most off-putting sounds to live within ear’s reach of?

A noisy bar or nightclub ranked top as the biggest put-off for homebuyers when it comes to noise pollution.

Busy roads placed as the second biggest turn-off when it comes to external noise, while industrial sites came in at number three.

Other potential put-offs when it comes to noise pollution include train lines, schools or playgrounds, emergency service stations, car garages and parks or swimming pools.

Head of eXp UK, Adam Day, commented: “A bit of peace and quiet is of great importance to homebuyers, as our homes provide a place where we can relax and unwind after the hectic pace of day-to-day life.

"So it’s no surprise that noise pollution can act as a significant deterrent to house hunters, particularly if it means they can’t enjoy their outside space without being disturbed.

"While some external noise is inevitable, those looking to sell close to a social outlet, a busy road or an industrial site may struggle to sell more than most and the reality is that a high degree of noise pollution will impact the price your home ultimately commands.”
