According to new research from DirectBlinds.co.uk, 56% of the population feel a house with a horrible view would be worth less and 27% would look to spend between £15,000 to £25,000 less on a property with a terrible view.
Whether it’s a building site, motorway or even a derelict building the recent independent study found that the view from your window can affect not only the value of your property but also your mood with 59% of UK adults claiming they would feel depressed by a bad view.
The top three worst views are:
1. An industrial site (23%)
2. Derelict building (21%)
3. Motorway (15%)
The study found that those living in Edinburgh and London need not worry. These cities were believed to have the best views in the country. Their residents can pull up their blinds each morning with the knowledge they are living in two of the UK’s most desirable cities. However, it isn’t great news for Brummies- with 1 in 5 (20%) respondents believing Birmingham has the worst views in the country.
David Roebuck, Managing Director of DirectBlinds.co.uk, had this to say: “We were amazed to see how much a bad view could potentially affect what people are willing to pay for a property. The potential psychological effect is also concerning. Hopefully homeowners with terrible views will have some beautiful curtains or blinds to cover them up!”
Moving out of the cities and into the country, it appears that the North has some of our favourite rural views with Lake Windermere crowned the most popular view closely followed by the Yorkshire Dales and Ben Nevis. However, the South doesn’t miss out altogether.
The top five rural views are as fllows:
1. Lake Windermere, Cumbria
2. Yorkshire Dales
3. Ben Nevis, Scotland
4. The Cotswolds
5. Land’s End, Cornwall
In recent weeks, DirectBlinds.co.uk has been urging homeowners around the country to take part in their search to find the nation’s worst view by sharing the scene from their window. The winning entry came from Diana Harper, aged 58 from High Wycombe, who said: “The view from my lounge window is of the apartment block bins and next door’s surgery car park. I’ve lived here for 18 months and my ideal view would be of the sea, or rolling hills!” As the winner of the competition Diana has won £250 to spend on blinds to cover up her terrible view.
