But one entrepreneur says that consumer confidence and lean, agile SME’s are the keys to our economic revival.
Speaking on the BBC Today programme Will Davies – co-founder of burgeoning property management concern aspect.co.uk – told economics editor Evan Davies that:
“Relatively small businesses can be flexible and take decisions on what they see…but they have to be able to adapt to the market and make the most of the opportunities that are out there.”
aspect.co.uk has recently announced that they will be expanding their successful £10 million London based property management operation throughout the regions during 2012.
Mr Davies said:
“All markets are affected by confidence. Consumers have to spend money on goods and services if we are going to boost the economy and businesses have to be confident enough to invest in their futures."
He went on to say that aspect.co.uk had found that the market for new kitchens and bathrooms was as strong now as it had been at anytime over the last five years.
“It is an example of the opportunities that are created by a recession. People don’t expect to be able to sell their house: they don’t expect to be able to move as so they are spending money of improvements.
“Small businesses and entrepreneurs have to make sure that they are delivering a service that people still want to buy during these tough times. We are not experiencing difficulties in trading and so we are continuing to invest heavily- particularly in systems."
